About

The only photo we have of this plaque
(with thanks to AE)
The original St George's church was demolished in 1993.

There was a memorial window, which is shown as the background to these pages, and a memorial plaque to men who lost their lives in the First World War. We only have a partial photo of this memorial (see right), taken as the church was being demolished.  Do you know what happened to the rest of this wooden plaque?

The congregation moved to a new church on York Street, where there is a brass plaque from the old church which mentions the dedication of the chapel in the old church to the men who fell in the First World War.

The 80 men named on this memorial, whom we found listed on a newspaper report of its dedication, are being researched by CG and MW.  If you have any information and especially photographs of these men they would love to hear from you.

We can usually be found in Barnsley Archives (part of the Experience Barnsley museum) in Barnsley Town Hall on Thursday mornings from 10am to 1pm where we meet up with other researchers to discuss our work and get assistance with our 'brick walls'.  You are more than welcome to come down to meet us!

If you have not been to Barnsley Archives before you will need to bring along two items of identification on your first visit.  More information can be found here.
